I’ve been sharing a lot about @thealicesanctuary I’ve been sharing a lot about @thealicesanctuary recently (I saved all my stories in highlights!). Yes, they’re filing an appeal-a process that involves a new committee and should allow Janneane + others to speak. To recap: the adjacent neighbour, who has been there for as long as TAS has and has participated in past events, complained last year as they started to set up for their small (under 20 people) summer weekend tours. A Wheatland county councillor cited “multiple complaints”, suggesting they were all against TAS when half were filed (by others) against the neighbour-one from 2014, before TAS was there. One was about parking on the side of the road in 2019. After lengthy, expensive rezoning applications, the county advised they apply for a home business permit (there’s no fitting permit for a charity), and admin advised council to approve it. At the March 14 mtg the councillor-who said “this is not agriculture, this is the polar opposite”, and stated that the colony to the north also has issues with TAS, knowing it’s not true, moved to deny a 2 year permit to have their tours. J was not asked to clarify anything (I was there) nor allowed to speak, and council voted 3-2 to deny the permit, in part because TAS is not a business-though that was their suggestion.

But! They added that she can also no longer have her volunteers come to help care for the animals + 118 acres of land on Saturdays-a group smaller than my book club, or if my family came to dinner. The county advised that in anticipation of further complaints, she document everyone who comes to TAS so she can “have specific information on hand to provide an explanation”. This is an egregious overstep.

The neighbour told CTV that TAS isn’t compatible with what HE does-on-farm slaughter. Yes, he has customers and visitors. (He isn’t among the 3 farms listed as a licensed OFSO in Wheatland county.) This whole thing is abhorrent. 2/3 of the animals at TAS come from farmers, the rest from Calgary/Siksika Humane, SPCA and other orgs who need homes for abused, neglected + special needs animals. TAS asked that letters of support be sent to info@thealicesanctuary.org -thanks for paying attention! ❤️🐴

I met a tree earlier this week, after spontaneousl I met a tree earlier this week, after spontaneously pulling over to go for a walk through the Union Cemetery. I’ve gone back for a visit every day or so since. This morning there were fresh rabbit tracks running up to it, and as I sat underneath a gentle breeze helped it wave sparkles of snow over my face.
Words cannot express what an exquisite human Jim w Words cannot express what an exquisite human Jim was, and how grateful I am to have had the chance to spend so much time with him and his (equally exquisite) family… to have experienced his energy and outlook on life. Your ripple effect has been immense and immeasurable, Jim. Your light has spread into so many dark corners, lit so many torches, shown so many people the way. So much love for you, always. Huge thanks to @colinwayphoto for sharing his photos of Jim with me. ❤️
My mom’s cousin Cathie brought my cousin Megan o My mom’s cousin Cathie brought my cousin Megan our great aunt Noreen’s recipe cards, and she mailed them to me because she knew how much I’d love them. Aunt Noreen worked in the steno pool at Hiram Walker’s, so they’re all nicely typed. She never married or had kids, but she was my godmother, and I got to love the sound of nighttime trains sleeping over at her house in Windsor, close to the tracks.. my sisters and I would slide around on her dusty rose satin sheets.
My new year cleanse. My new year cleanse.
New year, old me. ❤️ New year, old me. ❤️
I’m so, so grateful for 2022 and all it brought. I’m so, so grateful for 2022 and all it brought. May 2023 bring more of whatever makes you the most happy, healthy, peaceful and content. ❤️
