Honey Garlic Hoisin Wings

Hoisin+wings+2
Sorry guys, I have a brutal cold but haven’t had the chance to slow down much, and by bedtime I’m running on fumes. I must say I’m very much looking forward to going to bed with my bottle of NyQuil tonight.

It turns out social media is an effective means of transmitting medical advice – I’ve had a ton of sure-fire cold remedies relayed by twitter – hot water with honey and lemon! with ginger! with rum! I’ve tried it with all but the rum and while it is comforting and feels like it should do something to knock out my cold, it doesn’t seem to have the power.

However. Yesterday I ran into a friend while signing books downtown for the CBC Suncor Food Bank Drive, and upon hearing my lounge-singer voice she and her friend began offering up suggestions of same, except this time it was suggested I crush up some garlic, stir it into honey and eat that.

Worth a try, don’t you think? Would it matter if said honey and garlic were administered by chicken wing?

Honey Garlic Hoisin Wings

AuthorJulie

Yields1 Serving

3-4 lbs chicken wings or drumettes, wing tips trimmed
canola or olive oil, for cooking
Sticky Garlic Hoisin
1/4 cup hoisin sauce
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup honey
4 garlic cloves, crushed

1

Preheat oven to 450°F.

2

Pat wings dry with paper towel and arrange in a single layer on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. (Lay them on a wire rack set on the sheet, if you have one.) Drizzle with oil and toss to coat; roast for 20-30 minutes, until cooked through and starting to turn golden.

3

Meanwhile, stir together the sauce ingredients. Remove wings from the oven, drain away any fat in the bottom of the pan, toss wings with sauce (if you like, save some to toss the wings in afterward) and roast for another 10-15 minutes, until the skins are crispy and the sauce is caramelized. If you like, turn on the broiler and cook for 2-3 minutes, until deep golden. Serve immediately, with napkins.

I do think food used as medicine is so intriguing —
this is hard to do… but very interesting … the power is in the garlic! My 5 yr old had fingers full of warts (about 18), the dr. shots couldn’t cure. But applying garlic, overnight, once a week – they disappeared, since warts are viral.
“Use garlic as an antibacterial agent, an antiviral agent, an antifungal agent. Take 2 cloves of raw garlic–mince it finely, put on a spoon, and swallow with water. Do this with each meal for a total of 6 cloves daily. 2 cloves will equal approximately 1 teaspoon. At 6 cloves daily, you have reached the strength of an antibiotic or antiviral agent. Three pieces of crystallized ginger in the bottom of a tea cup, pour in very strong ginger tea. Drink the tea, then eat the ginger. The ginger burns a bit, but always works for me! My friend swears by zinc losenges. Good luck with that.

Those wings look killer. I’ve always wanted to make honey galric wings that were sticky and lucious, but mine either didn’t brown properly, or the honey ran off them. I’ll try this.
Best of luck with your cold.
I wish I was close enough to give you old fashined chicken soup. I learned to make it from a Jewish grandmother, and it kills viruses.

Friar’s Balsam for the cold and the throat. and food fixes everything, so yes, eat the wings! i bet there’s a cookbook in the ‘food as medicine’ idea. hmmmmmmm

Those wings look good! Might try them for a gathering of friends. My tried and true is Drixoral tablets. Not natural, but works like a charm for 12 whole hours. I live off it during my colds.

    Thanks for the recipe Julie!
Made these last night but, added 1 tbsp grated ginger. Hubby bbq’d them instead of cooking them in the oven and they were fantastic! Great cold too!
Thanks! Hope your cold goes away soon!

If you can catch it (whatever bug) soon enough I swear by Echinacea. Garlic has been around for all of man’s history and I really believe in its powers…all hail GARLIC!

Really? Garlic works for warts? I’ll try to apply some on mine this evening and see if its painless than laser. My son’s appetite is dwindling since last week. I sure will administer this yummy looking honey garlic chicken wings on him. 🙂 Hope you feel better soon Julie.

@ retro sweets – You will need to be patient. It took about 3 months for them to disappear (albeit there were a lot and they were big). It didn’t seem to be working and then all of a sudden they were gone. I just place a small piece of garlic on the wart with medical tape over night. It is only once a week (every 5th or every 7th day). Beware, your dreams will be filled with pasta :).

hahaha!Hey dreaming about pasta and disappearing warts after three months is a great treat! I tried some last night and my husband utterly hated it! I’ll suggest the pasta dreams when I put them on again next week. Or maybe I’ll be sleeping on the couch so that he can enjoy sleeping without feeling he’s a vampire I’m avoiding. 🙂 Thanks! 😉
